Preparatory Practices for Bhutashuddhi Kriya

Deep Breathing

  • Sit comfortably in any meditative posture
  • Place your hands in your lap
  • Slowly inhale to your full capacity
  • You chest will expand as you reach your capacity
  • As your breath starts running out slowly exhale
  • Do not bend as you exhale completely
  • Repeat the cycle again and again for 10 minutes

This technique gives instant calmness and freshness when you are tired.

Hissing Breath

Bhutashuddhi Kriya calls for roaming your awareness across the complete length of your spinal column. You should be able to inhale as your attention ascends from the botom of the spine to the top and you should be able to exhale slowly as your attention descends from the top of the spine to the bottom. In order to perform Bhutashuddhi Kriya correctly you need to extend the inhalation and exhalation time slightly by introducing a hissing sound. This technique is called as Ujjayi breathing.

  • Sit comfortably in any meditative posture
  • Place your hands in your lap
  • Now slowly start inhaling
  • As you begin contract your throat slightly so as to produce a soft hissing sound. This hissing sound resembles to snoring.
  • Let your chest expand as you fill in the air
  • As the breath starts running out exhale slowly
  • Keep the throat contracted as before so as to produce the same hissing sound
  • Keep repeating such cycles for 5-10 minutes

In this preparatory practice you need not pay any attention to mantras of individual chakras or roaming your attention across the spine. Just be aware of the hissing sound and try to make the entire action as smooth as possible.
